United airlines pilot training program

United Airlines offers a structured pilot training pathway through its United Aviate Program, designed to guide aspiring pilots from initial training to a career as a United Airlines First Officer.

✈️ United Aviate Program Overview

The United Aviate Program is United’s industry-leading pilot career development initiative, providing both aspiring flight students and commercial pilots a defined path to United as a First Officer. The program is flexible, accommodating individuals at various stages of their training and development.

🛫 Training Pathways

United offers multiple entry points into the Aviate Program:

  1. United Aviate Academy: Located in Phoenix, Arizona, this is United’s wholly owned flight school, designed for applicants with little to no piloting experience. The full course takes about a year to complete, requiring a full-time commitment of at least five days a week. The curriculum integrates computer-based instruction, ground training, and aircraft flight training.
  2. Partner Flight Schools and Universities: United has partnerships with various flight schools and universities across the country. Students can enroll in these institutions and, upon meeting certain criteria, apply to join the Aviate Program.
  3. Experience Building: After obtaining the necessary certifications, pilots can build experience by working as Certified Flight Instructors (CFIs) at partner schools or by flying for Aviate-participating United Express carriers or Part 135 operators. Completing 1,200 Pilot-in-Command (PIC) hours with these partners secures a path to a United First Officer position.

✅ Admissions & Eligibility

To apply for the United Aviate Academy, candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (United does not sponsor foreign visas)
  • Have the ability to train in provided aircraft equipment with a height restriction of 6’3” and a maximum weight of 250 pounds

Applicants with prior flight experience beyond a Private Pilot License (PPL) may not be eligible for the Academy but can explore other entry points into the Aviate program.

💰 Financial Considerations & Scholarships

While the Aviate Academy provides a direct path to a career with United Airlines, it’s important to note that the program is not free. United has partnered with organizations to offer scholarships aimed at increasing diversity in aviation. Applicants are encouraged to research available financial aid options and scholarships to support their training.

⚠️ Recent Developments

As of April 2025, United Aviate Academy faces a federal lawsuit alleging fraud and misrepresentation. The plaintiffs claim issues such as instructor shortages, inconsistent training, and unmet program expectations. United maintains confidence in its program but has not addressed specific allegations.
